I am so glad you cleared that up Martin because it certainly puzzled me.

The residents of Leyland need to be informed of the potential health risks if they are to have any meaningful say in whether the town should be WiFi-enabled.

Scientific studies into the effects of microwaves from wireless technologies are published in journals often only available to subscribers. Scientists do not always publicise their findings to the general public. Some of the science is described in the website http://wifiinschools.org.uk The health concerns from WiFi exposure include far more than headaches, nausea and other symptoms of electrohypersensitivity. Studies have found decreases in male fertility, decreased fetal and neonatal heart rate and cardiac output, altered fetal gene expression (involved in organ development), changes in the electrical activity of the brain which may affect brain development and certainly a change in brain functioning, there have been reports of decreases in the hormone melatonin which may change the timing of puberty in some children (and increase the risk of a range of cancers), animal studies have found increased incidences of epileptic seizures, some studies have found decreased cognitive abilities (memory, decision making...) ..... These cannot be dismissed lightly and would be important to anyone affected by them. Good long term safety studies should be carried out before whole communities are constantly exposed to WiFi radiation.

There is indeed a scientific basis for this objection to WiFi across Leyland. Here are some reasons why the council should not introduce this WiFi scheme. Here are just a few of them.

[1] the Bioinitiative Report www.bioinitiative.org
[2] EU document - Reports: Mid-Term Review of the European Environment and Health Action Plan 2004-2010, September 4, 2008 "

link

The Bioinitiative Report (2007) reviewed over 1500 studies investigating physiological effects of the radiation frequencies used in mobile telephony. The scientists concluded that the radiation causes physiological effects via non-thermal mechanisms, that is the effects were proven and they were not due to heating. This point is important because the present exposure guidelines used in the UK only protect against thermal effects.
In a nutshell the present guidelines do not protect health.

So, what does the EU Parliament have to say about the Bioinitiative Report? They voted overwhelmingly to accept the findings of the report.
I refer you to this EU document:

link

Reports: Mid-Term Review of the European Environment and Health Action Plan 2004-2010, September 4, 2008 "

Note points J, 21,22,23 which state that

J. whereas these problematic developments in environmental health have been accompanied in recent years by the emergence of new diseases or syndromes, such as multiple chemical hypersensibility, dental-amalgam syndrome,
******* hypersensitivity to electromagnetic radiation*****,
sick-building syndrome and attention-deficit and hyperactivity syndrome in children,

21. Is greatly concerned at the Bio-Initiative international report(8) concerning electromagnetic fields, which summarises over 1500 studies on that topic and which points in its conclusions
*******to the health risks **************
posed by emissions from mobile-telephony devices such as mobile telephones, UMTS, Wifi, Wimax and Bluetooth, and also DECT landline telephones;

22. Notes that the limits on exposure to electromagnetic fields which have been set for the general public are obsolete, since they have not been adjusted in the wake of Council Recommendation 1999/519/EC of 12 July 1999 on the limitation of exposure of the general public to electromagnetic fields (0Hz to 30 GHz)(9) , obviously take no account of developments in information and communication technologies, of the recommendations issued by the European Environment Agency or of the stricter emission standards adopted, for example, by Belgium, Italy and Austria, and do not address the issue of vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, newborn babies and children;
[My comment - Council Recommendation 1999/519/EC is also Known as the 'EU STOA Report']

23. Calls, consequently, upon the Council to amend its Recommendation 1999/519/EC in order to take into account the Member States' best practices and thus to set stricter exposure limits for all equipment which emits electromagnetic waves in the frequencies between 0.1 MHz and 300 GHz;

And

36. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission, the governments and parliaments of the Member States and the WHO.

-----------------
Doctors in Germany and Austria have been campaigning against the high exposure levels to mobile telephony that are causing ill health in their patients. The German Federal government has advised home users to prefer wired systems. Paris Libraries have removed wifi from 4 libraries because of health concerns and abandoned their plans for a wifi network.
Amongst others.

Look at the views of medical doctors scientists who are involved in research. e.g. Venice Resolution here: http://www.radiationresearch.org
Have a look at The Benevento Resolution especially points 6.6 and 6.7 on wifi. http://www.icems.eu/benevento_resolution.htm

The EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT acknowledges that electrosensitivity is a growing problem [point J above]. Approx 2-5% of people have become sensitive to the pulsed microwave frequencies used by mobile phones, mobile phone base stations, DECT phones and/or wifi etc..

The personal costs of this wifi scheme to anyone who is electrosensitive:

What this Leyland wifi scheme means for Leyland people, especially those living in the wifi strip, is if they are - or later become - electrosensitive they will have to either move home at a financial loss, stay and suffer ill health/loss of quality of life, or try to shield their home against the radiation. The latter option is more difficult where the microwave radiation is coming from different directions. For residents the exposure will be 24/7.

All the services shops, medical services, banks etc are along this wifi strip. If you happen to be - or become - sensitive to the wifi frequencies then Leyland town centre will become a place to avoid as far as possible. That is unless you want a cracking headache/migraine/itching etc. each and every time you spend too long in the town.

Glastonbury residents are currently fighting to have their wifi system removed because of the health problems that it is causing.
http://www.glastonburynaturalhealth.co.uk/WhyWi-Fi.html

Remember, the wifi technology has never ever been proven safe.
Indeed Sir William Stewart, former Chairman of the HPA, on the Panorama TV programme, called for wifi effects on health to be investigated as a matter of urgency. Unfortunately, the HPA is only measuring exposure levels. There are NO actual studies of health planned as stated in the LEP. See www.powerwatch.org.uk

Here are a number of useful links for anyone who wishes to do some research for themselves, as I hope that you will do, especially the sceptics here.

the town already is wifi enabled if you go down any street with a laptop i can gaurantee you will find 10 or so hotspots in range 3/10 chance it will be an open one too! hehe

That is one of the reasons I made quite certain that mine is security enabled. You can park outside any time you wish.[Tongue][Tongue][Tongue]
