Merry Christmas to all from Anacortes, WA., USA. (@48.4852N, 122.6860W).

Not sure exactly where in town this is, but if you're interested in seeing just where we're located, pull up a street map of the area from Google Maps. Look for the Washington State Ferry System terminal, which is out at the north-western tip of town. We're just down the southern side of the ridge, on Doon Way. Ours is the fourth house from the western end of the street on its north side, across from houses on the private waterfront side of the Skyline Marina.

Brother, Colin, from Plymouth, is visiting for Christmas. We're having a family bash on Boxing day, with our three daughters and two husbands, 3 of our 6 grandchildren and "significant others" and our first great-grandchild. One grandson lives in New York and one granddaughter in Montana and they both came over at Thanksgiving. Our son and family (one more grandchild) live in Japan and were here in October.

RE: A busy month starts today
So where is that in relation to Windsor St. Frank? Great views across the Pacific.

Noel:

Windsor is the first street on the left as you head east from our house, about 300 yards away. It's a very short street with just one house and one vacant lot on the west side. On the east side are the gable ends of two houses, one on Kingsway and one on Doon. The homes on the south side of Doon Way as far as Tugboat Park are mostly waterfront on the Skyline Marina. Going further east, the houses on the south side of Doon Way are cliff-top view homes.

We're a long way from the Pacific, though - it's a drive of several hours. The "ocean" we are close to is Burroughs Bay. The Strait of Juan de Fuca runs along the south edge of the bay and forms the boundary between Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula of Washington further off to the west. I'll investigate Google maps and give you some references in a few days.

You've actually got the shadow of the Google camera car as it passes your house Frank. I thought that was the Pacific , forget just how big the USA is!

RE: A busy month starts today
During the time we had the motor-home (2010 - 2014) we drove it about 5000 miles, mainly on shortish trips around Washington and Oregon. It was our usual procedure to leave home after lunch on Sunday and head home again the following Friday. That way, we missed all the families whose parents worked and only used their RV's Friday afternoon through Sunday evening.

We certainly rediscovered how big the country is. From Anacortes to Seattle is 100 miles or so and you're only 30% of the way to the Oregon/Washington border. We did a few longer trips, including one all the way to the Oregon/California border along the Pacific Coast. That took the best part of 3 weeks, as we went from Anacortes across to the Olympic Peninsula of Washington before heading south from the north-western-most corner of the state. No motorways all the way south, but the I-5 freeway coming back.

With petrol at about $4.90 a US gallon and 8 mpg consumption, we finally gave up the RV life. Petrol is now down around $2.50, but we decided not to go back to the lifestyle.

Petrol's around £5 a gallon over there though we are charged in £ per litre, thanks to the EU. We older ones have to do a calculation to work out what the mpg is. Notice how strong the light is on the street map of your area Frank. We get used to dull grey most the time.
